‘Arrow’ Season 3 First Look: The Price of Victory

1

Last night before the Arrow cast and producers took the stage at Comic Con, Warner Bros. released the first trailer for the superhero drama’s third season. While the video included a lot of season two recap, it also gave viewers a glimpse of what they can expect for season three and it looks like major changes are ahead.

Before we dive into the new footage, let’s rewind to where we left off after the two-part season finale aired in May. Team Arrow with some help from Laurel, Detective Lance, Amanda Waller and the Suicide Squad and Nyssa and the League of Assassins managed to take down Slade’s super powered army and then Oliver went head to head with Deathstroke himself.

The good guys prevailed, but not without a few major bombshells dropping. Dig learned that Lila was pregnant, Sara agreed to leave town with the league once again, Quentin collapsed, Thea took Malcolm up on his offer for father-daughter villain bonding and we learned that Oliver made a voyage off the island and ended up in Hong Kong.

So where does the show go from here? Following its pattern from the first two seasons, several months have passed since the battle and things are actually going well for Oliver. Laurel’s still in the DA’s office and the two are working together to fight crime, Roy has a costume and bow of his own, Oliver is attempting to regain control of his company and he asks Felicity to have dinner with him.

Naturally, this means everything will blow up in his face, something Executive Producer Andrew Kreisberg confirmed at the Comic Con panel. “So much of season three is about the price of victory and enjoying the peace they’ve found. As Joss Whedon says, ‘the minute you give one of your characters happiness, you have to yank it away for them.’”

Judging by the season three footage, the producers are not wasting any time doing exactly that. Fans get a glimpse of Oliver and Felicity out to dinner and he confesses that he didn’t spend all five years on the island. The next time we see Felicity in the video, she’s wearing the same dress and covered in blood.

We also see some major friction between Oliver and Digg. Oliver doesn’t want Digg in the field anymore (probably because he’s going to be a dad) and the other man does not take it well as he points out all the times Oliver would have been dead without him.

Elsewhere, Sara returns, Amanda Waller greets Oliver in Hong Kong and issues a less than subtle threat, Ray Palmer introduces himself to Oliver and Felicity as he bids to take over Queen Consolidated and there’s a brief shot of the new Count Vertigo. Of course it wouldn’t be Arrow if the video didn’t contain plenty of fight scenes, dramatic moments and a certain line about failing this city…

  1. I’m excited for a lot of things. The Honk Kong storyline: how will it impact on what he’s becoming? What impact does it have for the present? I hope we’ll see him become the trained fighter he is, because I believe he was trained before he met the Bratva. Also how will they convince Oliver of staying and not escaping anymore? Amanda Waller delivered her line but will there be more to it?
I’m excited to see a friendship forming between Oliver and Laurel. I’m also wondering how she will work together with Team Arrow. I hope it will either be gradually or she’s fully part of the team but then I want some explanation. Because I think she needs to form a bond with the other members besides Oliver. I’m curious to see how that works out.
The angst we’ll get between Oliver and Diggle, I’m interested in seeing how the other members of Team Arrow are going to react to this. I can’t imagine Felicity agreeing with Oliver.
I’m also excited to see what will happen with Roy now. How will his story arc evolve.
And last but not least I’m really looking forward to what we’ll see about Felicity. Her backstory, the evolution in the relationship with Oliver, the repercussions of their date, …
So many things will happen this season and I’m all ready for this!
