In this week’s episode of Beacon Hill, Sara finally goes upstairs to have a talk with her grandfather. They say the devil you know is better than the devil you don’t. In the case of Senator Preston, despite the fact that he is Sara’s grandfather, I get the impression that she doesn’t really know him at all and that’s the way he likes it.
It’s clear Sara is very confused by her grandfather’s manipulations. She doesn’t understand why he is so content being cruel. Senator Preston is clearly a fan of mind games and an even bigger fan of the power that comes along with them. He’s a real smug SOB.
Sara is very uncomfortable speaking with him but tells him that she is hoping to make peace. “Peace? There will never be peace in this house. I don’t know what’s wrong with this damn family. Everyone’s walking around on their tiptoes afraid of their own shadows. Your mother hiding behind the bottle. Eric acting like a bloody nurse. I don’t know if there is peace anywhere but there certainly isn’t in the family.”
He reveals to Sara that he got her the internship in New York, the one that she left Katherine for all those years ago. He mocks her saying that he was surprised that she didn’t put up much of a fight and refers to an altercation they once had.
He taunts Sara telling her that Katherine was meant to be in politics and that Sara was in her way. “I was happy with her before you interfered,” she says. “But was she happy with you? Do you think she would have been happy playing house? No. She was meant for bigger things,” he responds. Sara accuses him of doing what he did because he hated the fact that she was gay. He denies this and tells her to leave.
The conversation didn’t give any answers to the mystery of why Senator Preston wanted to break up Sara and Katherine but it did make it clear that it was his intention. Why did he do it? Was it because he wanted get a gay granddaughter out of the way to protect his reputation? Or was his goal actually Katherine? I have a feeling the answer is much more complicated than Sara realizes.
