Former soap star Brandon Routh is about to take on another super powered role in the DC Universe — this time on The CW’s Arrow.
The one-time Man of Steel is joining the CW’s superhero flagship in the recurring role of Ray Palmer, also known as The Atom, for the series’ third season. Ray Palmer, described as an unrivaled scientist and inventor, becomes the new owner of Queen Consolidated and will play an unexpected role in Oliver (Stephen Amell) and Felicity’s (Emily Bett Rickards) lives. His interest with the corporation’s Applied Sciences division is one of the mysteries that will unfold during the season.
In the comics, The Atom can manipulate his weight and mass and shrink or grow his body and other objects at a molecular level. Though the character had made numerous appearances in the DC Comics universe and its associated animated series, TVLine reports this is The Atom’s first live-action appearance.
Routh headlined Warner Bros.’ 2006 film Superman Returns. His TV credits include One Life to Live, Undressed, Chuck, Partners, Chosen and Enlisted.
Routh is the latest new cast member announced to join Arrow’s upcoming season. Announced last week was Sin City alum Devon Aoki as Katana, Karl Yune as Maseo Yamashiro (Katana’s husband) and Peter Stormare as Count Vertigo.
Arrow’s third season premiere will air October 8 on The CW.
