After the release and popularity of The Hunger Games film, buzz surrounded the pilot for The Selection based on the books by Kiera Cass. Her books tell the story of a romance set 300 years in the future. The romance centers on a poor woman (played by Aimee Teegarden, Friday Night Lights) and the lottery that chooses her to participate in a competition to become the next queen of a war-torn country. Ethan Peck and Sean Patrick Thomas co-star in the pilot, which was written and executive produced by Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain. Despite the buzz, the series was not ordered by the CW, but there is still hope.
At The CW upfronts network president Mark Pedowitz announced the series was being redeveloped. He stated that, “We’re going to go back in fast and redevelop it and see if we can get it up. I’m a big, big fan of the genre, I read all the Hunger Games books; I wander through the adult dystopian fiction area quite a bit. If you’re not an angel, werewolf or vampire, you’re a female heroin who’s 16 years old who fights in the future dystopian world.”
The Selection would definitely in at the network, whose most popular shows include The Vampire Diaries and Supernatural.
Also in development is Supernatural’s Eric Kripke’s adaption of Deadman based on the DC Comic that tells the story of trapeze artist, Boston Brand, who is murdered yet continues to live by inhabiting other people’s bodies. Pedowitz stated that this show could be part of the 2013-2014 show cycle.
