There aren’t as many supercouples on our soap operas anymore but there is no denying that 2014 was a good year for romantic pairings. As this year comes to a close we feel hopeful for a new year filled with love, longing, and bittersweet loss. Here are TVSource Magazine’s picks for The Year In Soaps: Best Couples of 2014.
There was a lot of debate in the TVSource Magazine offices about what couples to select. After all, the definition of “best” is completely subjective. What’s good for one, may be terrible for another. But in the end, we decided on nine couples that made us feel in 2014. These couples gave made us feel excitement, heartbreak, passion, optimism, hope, sexy. And we hope you did too. Julian and Alexis, General Hospital
Are We (Star Crossed) Lovers or Liars?
We cannot get enough of Julian and Alexis! They’re sexy, scandalous, complicated, star crossed lovers who love each other so much that it hurts. It’s been years since GH has treated Alexis like she’s a sexual being with sexual urges like everyone else in town, so it was a welcome treat when the show embarked on what would become the phenomenon known as ‘Julexis’. Julian is a lot like the other men Alexis has fallen far – wealthy, powerful, easy on the eyes, but unlike the men of her past, Julian loved her for her. There were no other women, no affairs, just a straight up, “I like you. You like me. We should be together.”
Julian’s life isn’t tailor made for a family. But meeting Alexis gave him everything he never knew he wanted – a family. He discovered a daughter and son he never knew he had, and a grandson that would become the apple of his eye, despite eithers claiming he was using Danny as a human shield to fend off Sonny. Alexis made Julian want to be a better man, and he was willing to leave the mob for her. Hell, he did! But when his son’s life was threatened by his sociopathic boss, Julian reluctantly was pulled back into the life he knew could cost him the woman he loves – and it did.
When Alexis learned Julian was complicit in the framing of Ric Lansing, Alexis’ ex-husband and father of her child, and knew that her best friend Luke was being held hostage for months and did nothing, she had no choice but to end their relationship for good. Underneath her anger and pain, was the heavy reality that she loved this man more than he deserved, and he lied to her. He betrayed what she thought they had. Alexis can’t see how he was placed in an impossible situation – that lying to her was to protect her and their children, from any more pain. But the damage was done.
It’s not going to be an easy road to reconciliation for Julian and Alexis, especially as she grows closer to Ned, and he seeks out a fellow lost soul in Olivia, but we have hope and faith that a Julexis reunion will happen in 2015. After all, how can you deny the power of Julexis?
