‘Hart of Dixie’ Review: The Story of Lemon, Two Boyfriends and a Night in Jail

Last night, Hart of Dixie returned from hiatus and brought Lemon Breeland back to our screens and all was once again right in the TV world. “Here You Come Again” was a fun episode filled with Bluebell charm, hilarious Breeland family drama and our favorite characters (mostly) interacting with each other.

Before we talk about Lemon and all her glory, let’s discuss the youngest Breeland. Magnolia was also back in Bluebell, bossing her father around and letting him know all the reasons why his welcome home party for Lemon was probably going to be a failure. Everyone was worried that Lemon was angry with them since no one had gone to visit her. But it turned out that wasn’t the only reason Magnolia had returned home.

She pulled George away from his sad guy at the bar routine with Lavon (it was pretty funny to see these two brokenhearted and wallowing in misery while Wade was in a secure relationship), and told George that she’d gotten kicked out of boarding school. George reluctantly agreed to go to the school with her and plead her case, but Magnolia left out some key details like the fact that she’d stolen the headmaster’s car. By the end of the episode, Brick was shipping her off to Grandma’s house and to attend religious school. Come back soon, Magnolia!

Speaking of school, Zoe was reliving her fifth grade glory days with her mother. Candice was going overboard trying to prove that she was the best family member and had filled the carriage house with expensive gifts for Zoe and Joel’s house. Joel was not amused by any of it because Candice had nothing but criticism for him, but Zoe was basking in her mother’s attention. It reminded her of when her mother was her campaign manager for the fifth grade election. So when Candice offered to be Zoe’s PR person to get her half of the practice back, Zoe was all for it, despite Joel’s objections.

But Zoe is Zoe and she has a bad habit of putting her foot in her mouth. First, she ruined her interview with Dash by admitting that she’d had a bet with Brick during the health challenge. Candice raised the stakes and decided to make Brick the bad guy in the press, but Zoe’s conscience got the better of her and she put a stop to her mother’s smear campaign and Candice agreed that their relationship works when she’s in New York and Zoe is in Bluebell where she belongs. It was sweet to see these two on the same side and coming to a realistic understanding. Candice got a few final digs in at Joel before she left.

Now let’s get back to the highlight of the episode: Lemon’s return. Brick had gathered everyone for a surprise party and after being in hiding places for hours, they realized Lemon was not coming back. Brick assumed it was because she was mad at everyone, but then Wade got a call from the lady in question and she told him that she needed him to come pick her up and not tell anyone where he was going. Wade was fine with that, but reminded her that he needed a location and she told him that she was in the county jail.

I cannot gush enough about how much I love Wade and Lemon’s friendship. As soon as the decision was made late last season to put these two on a path to bonding, I was all for it. They’re my favorite characters and they just bring something extra awesome out in each other. My biggest hope for Lemon’s return was that we’d get more Lemon and Wade scenes and this episode was everything I wanted and then some. Wade headed to bail Lemon out, but since the county jail workers were extremely slow, Lemon had plenty of time to tell Wade her story.

The next few scenes alternated between Wade and Lemon sitting on the prison bench to flashbacks of Lemon’s time with Grandma. Lemon explained that at first it was a nightmare and Grandma was ordering her around and complaining about everything she did and why she was doing it wrong. But then things started looking up for Lemon when Carter Covington came by for a visit. Pretty soon, the two were dating and Grandma was so impressed with her life choices that she decided that she was going to give Lemon the money that she needed to buy Fancy’s.

Wade didn’t see how that landed Lemon in jail, but she wasn’t done with the story. Carter left town on business and that was when Lemon started spending more time with Grandma’s chauffer. He didn’t speak a lot of English, but he wrote poetry and Lemon was very attracted to him. So she started dating him too and keeping it a secret from both men that she was involved with more than one person. After bribing the prison staff to make sure her grandmother never found out she’d been there, Lemon and Wade drove back to Bluebell.

He warned her that dating two people without them knowing usually leads to someone getting punched in the face. Lemon wasn’t concerned because she’d worked out a schedule for when they could come visit her and never cross paths. She was basking in her new dating life and it was super adorable to see her so happy. Wade reminded her that he still didn’t know why she’d been in jail. It turned out that Lemon and Enrique had been drunk and dancing naked in a fountain. She’d taken the blame so her grandmother wouldn’t fire him.

Lemon was reunited with Brick and he was relieved that she wasn’t angry at him. AnnaBeth was worried that Lemon would be mad when she found out that she was one of the leaders of the Belles, but she didn’t get a chance to tell her because Carter showed up to surprise Lemon. Brick was thrilled that Lemon had found someone and everyone headed to Lemon’s welcome back party…just as Enrique showed up at the Rammer Jammer looking for Lemon. Wade tried to call her and warn her, but Wanda had already passed the information on to him where he could find Lemon.

Town events are one of my favorite things about this show because nothing ever goes as planned and it’s so much fun to watch. Lemon was shocked to see Enrique and Wade rushed in to help (best). Magnolia offered to show Enrique the town and Lemon was just rattled enough to be fine with it. Grandma showed up to complicate the party even more and as Lemon tried to juggle her suitors, Lavon came through for her by pulling the fire alarm and bringing an abrupt end to the party as Tom gleefully reminded everyone the importance of fire safety.

Once they evacuated, Lemon and AB had the kind of moment only true friends can have. They yelled at each other, blurted out everything they’d been keeping from one another, smiled and hugged and then went about their business. I love how much their friendship has grown over the seasons. They’ve had their ups and downs, but now they value each other too much to let the petty stuff get between them and it’s so fun to watch.

Unfortunately, everything else in Lemon’s life was about to go wrong. The two men found out about each other and they both walked away. Grandma found out and she took back her offer to help Lemon with Fancy’s. Brick was disappointed and refused to get involved. On the bright side, Lemon still had Wade. He stopped by her place to reintroduce her to Vivian, who’d been afraid of seeing Lemon again because they’d had issues as kids. But once Lemon found out the two were dating, she was so happy for Wade that she welcomed Vivian with open arms and wanted to know almost everything. Again, I love this Wade/Lemon friendship so much.

Of course that wasn’t quite the end of the tale of Lemon and her two boyfriends. Carter surprised her with flowers and Enrique surprised her with a song. They both wanted to fight for her and agreed to give her time to make a decision. It’s definitely not a bad time to be Lemon Breeland. Although, let’s be honest. I am not pulling for either one of these guys and I have a feeling neither of them will be around very long.

So remember that thing I said at the beginning of this review about the characters mostly interacting? Zoe and Wade had zero interactions in this episode. Admittedly, I was enjoying the Wade and Lemon scenes too much to be angry about it, but it’s still very frustrating that the writers have gone to such lengths to keep them apart this season. I do think things will change before the end of the season, but this got old somewhere around 10 episodes ago. It’s one thing not to have Wade and Zoe in a relationship. It’s something else entirely not to let them even share a scene together. That’s not cool, show.
