‘A Day of Days’ Interview: James Scott & Alison Sweeney Discuss ‘Ejami’ Dynamic, Tease ‘Big Stuff’ Ahead

Days of our Lives stars James Scott (EJ) and Alison Sweeney (Sami) sat down for an interview with TVSource Magazine during the “Day of Days” fan event at Universal Studios this past Saturday. The fan favorites discuss the ‘Ejami’ dynamic in storylines, character direction and tease what’s coming up for the controversial supercouple.

Alison Sweeney loves getting feedback from fans on her alter ego’s current storylines. “Lots of people were excited about the wedding that aired and the horrible lie that EJ is keeping from Sami,” she said with a smile.

Scott playfully interjected and defended his character, “He is not really lying, he just chose not to tell you something.”

The two then shifted ever-so-easily into character, engaging in an amusing exchange that was like watching soap opera theater.

“You are so mad at me for lying about the things that I lie about, as Sam,” said Sweeney laughing.

“I’m not lying,” retorted Scott. “I just choose not to tell you something and I choose not to tell you because if I had told you, what would you have done with it?”

“Thrown her in prison for raping my brother,” Sweeney exclaimed passionately. Later adding, “[Eric] would have been so happy to have known what happened to him. He was having these terrible nightmares; my brother hasn’t been well in months.”

Scott laughed and asked, “What about Brady?”

“We could go on and on [about this] so you better change the subject,” said Sweeney.

Last week, EJ discovered that sister, Kristen, drugged and raped Father Eric, keeping it secret for months. Of course in Salem, nothing stays a secret for long and this whopper of one would come at the most inopportune for Kristen – during her wedding to Brady! With Sami and EJ at their sides, and Eric presiding over the ceremony, Brady and Kristen were ready to pledge their eternal love for one another, that is until a DVD of Kristen’s sinister deed was played for all to see.

By adding Marlena, Victor and Nicole’s concerns regarding the marriage from hell, it made for an explosive couple of days! Sweeney praised the effectiveness of the writing for conveying the perspectives of all involved. “Everybody’s point of view is valid. It really allows the story to unfold in a really strong way, and that is fun to play.”

Scott assured the climax of Brady and Kristen’s wedding was not the end of the multifaceted storytelling for EJ and Sami. “It is about to get interesting,” he stated with a grin.

“I know we overuse the word ‘change,’ but this time they have embraced that they are two very flawed people and allowed it to reflect in the struggles that they have in their relationship,” the actress details.

James Scott was very complimentary of the writers for showcasing the complex dynamic between EJ and Sami. “They are allowing the characters to be the best, and worst of themselves and they trust their relationship will be accepting of that,” assessed the actor. “That is what makes the characters and their relationship the most unique, and why I think the fans have always been so supportive of the relationship; they have seen the potential in it. How great would it be if Sami could be Sami in a relationship, and be with someone who didn’t judge and punish her for it?”

Sweeney agreed with her co-star and praised the character direction. “Sometimes it charms the other person, and sometimes it doesn’t, like ‘Oh your so cute when you tried to kill so and so’ and sometimes it is like ‘No, that’s a line you don’t cross”. It is [a fun dynamic] to play,” the actress noted. “They have played that out. It is fun thing for Sami to come home and say; ‘Guess what I did today!'”

While discussing the difficulty of filming big, emotional scenes like the ones that just aired at the failed wedding, the actors recalled some of their own challenging material.  Scott somberly said his most challenging was when he had to look at baby Grace in the morgue after her death. Sweeney nodded in agreement and pointed out how amazing his work was in those scenes.

Sweeney, who celebrated her 20th anniversary on Days of our Lives this year, couldn’t contain her excitement as she previewed some upcoming scenes (airing at a later date) that she described as challenging. “There is a set of scenes that we are doing that I am so focused on that I can’t even think of the past” she stated.

When pressed for more details, she opened up just a enough without giving to much away. “It is one of the best written shows I have ever read. I am already bracing myself for it, and am excited. I got chills. I cried reading it. I am very nervous.”

Scott muted his reaction to co-star’s excitement, simply teasing, “Yeah, big, big stuff is coming.”
