CASTING CHAIR: Roger Howarth as ‘General Hospital’s’ Eric Quartermaine, Jr.

Now that it looks as if former One Life to Live stars Roger Howarth, Michael Easton and Kristen Alderson will return to General Hospital as new characters, TVSource Magazine decided to take on the role of head writer and casting director to create new roles for these three actors. Who knows, it might become a regular feature on the site. First up on our list is Roger Howarth (ex-Todd, GH/OLTL).

Roger Howarth as Eric Quartermaine, Jr.

General Hospital could always use more Quartermaines and Howarth is the perfect man for the job. Newer fans may not remember Edward Quartermaine’s other son, Eric Quartermaine, popularly known as Jimmy Lee Holt. Our plan has Howarth playing Jimmy’s son, Eric Quartermaine, Jr.

Scenario: When discussing the possible long-lost heir with Luke (Tony Geary) in January, Tracy (Jane Elliot) mentioned that her estranged half-brother Jimmy had been disinherited. Why not bring Eric Quartermaine, Jr. back to town with a plan to reclaim the birthright that was taken away from him? He leads a group of financial backers who take over ELQ, forcing Tracy and AJ into minor roles within the company. AJ and Tracy would be forced to team up to drive Eric out of their lives and out of their company.

Smart, sexy, conniving. Always thinks he’s the smartest person in the room…because he usually is. He’s the product of a May-December romance and didn’t meet his father until he was 5 years old. His father married his mother to give him the family he (Jimmy Lee) never had but always wanted. It didn’t hurt that his mother was insanely wealthy.

A graduate of Harvard and a Rhodes Scholar, Eric studied finance and eventually took over his family’s private equity firm, leading it to become one of Wall Street’s most powerful investment firms. He has his grandfather’s instinct for business, but is more ruthless than Edward could imagine. He loathes the Quartermaines for what he feels was the rejection of his father and treating his side of the family as if they didn’t exist. He is driven by a desire for power and control, willing to step on anyone and do anything to get ahead…when it comes to business that is.

In his personal life, Eric is quite the opposite. He looks at love as a weakness and desires only casual flings. The one woman he opened himself up to betrayed him and married his former best friend. He’s generally a nice person – unless your last name is Quartermaine or that of those who wronged him. He’s very philanthropic, with most of his charitable donations goings towards experimental medical research.

After taking over ELQ, he hires Alexis to work as ELQ’s General Counsel. Is interested in getting to know her for reasons unknown. Finds himself drawn to her but not in a romantic capacity. Why? Becomes a playboy in town, occasionally dating Olivia and taking an interest in Elizabeth, much to the chagrin of AJ. His interest in destroying the Quartermaines may not be his primary reason for coming to Port Charles.

His actions as CEO lead to profitable quarters, but a shady business deal leaves ELQ vulnerable to a take over from the person he least expected…

Additional Casting: Maura West as Eric’s ex-lover. She would be great as the woman who turned Eric off to love for good. Who did she end up marrying? That question could play into a bigger mystery of why Eric is so interested in Alexis and Elizabeth.

  1. […] ill-conceived character. If I were in his shoes, I would have taken a different approach, something I detailed in a column a few months back. This is an unnecessary uphill battle that Ron, his team and Howarth must contend […]

  2. Id love if this were true!

  3. Ok..the story line sounds great, but where is Sam in this story?

  4. If that’s your pic,you have some nerve calling anyone names!

  5. Great idea! If they are going to bring him in as a new character, I think he needs to be someone who is connected to the canvas already.

I also think it would be cool if RH (or maybe even ME) played one of Sam’s rich ex-husbands that she conned. He could have seen her on TV during the Vampire stuff and now wants to confront her. It would give KeMo some interesting story line and I liked the chemistry between KeMo and RH.

  6. Interesting idea but no to romance with Alexis and NO to hiring Maura West. Alexis is a hag stuck with Shawn and I can’t stand Maura West, specially her last stint on Y&R! Since it already is established let him go after Carly or vice versa.

  7. Elizabeth is popular character love this character Elizabeth Webber real don’t what you think.Writers would just give this character storyline really stop bull carp.

  8. As long as the story is good (and you give a wink to us fans) I’ll go along for the ride…

  9. WOW What venom! What did Rebecca Herbst ever do to you?!
You are incorrect in saying Liz has been shown not to be popular – Rebecca and the character of Liz were to be written off a couple of years ago and the FANS outcry is what saved her job!

  10. Figured TV Source would try bring someone in as a Q, to be interested in Liz. Some of their worker or whatever are nothing but a Liz pimper, or Jiz pimper. Liz has been shown over and over not to be popular with the fans, only popular with some of the people who work for SID,SOD and even TVSource. The best thing that ever happen to Liz was Lucky and thanks goodness JJ can act. It time TVSource to stop pimping Liz who has had numbers of s/l and have sucked in all of them. The character Liz is not a interesting character and show have joined Lucky overseas with her kids a long time ago.I have no ideal why these folks seems to think that the Q’s owe Liz anything.I never seen any chemistry with she and Jason and definitely don’t see any with her and AJ. The role Liz should have had was Britt’s.Pretty girls are not always evil!Liz have the looks to have played what Britt is playing.Liz has a hard looking face and she is always rounding her eyes and turning her lips up, so she would have been perfect, in that she could be believeable.

  11. Love that idea. Just enough different from Todd, but making use of RH’s ability to play layers to a character. I’m imagining Carly’s face if someone who looks ALMOST like Todd walks in one day, looking for a room…..
