Sam and Patrick, General Hospital
What If We Ruin It All, And We Love Like Fools…
Sam and Patrick have always been about the alternative, the “other” option. Since Jason’s untimely exit from the show, there was a story waiting in the wings to be told of two friends in mourning for ones they loved, struggling to find a way to move on with their lives while adapting into their new roles as single parents. Through the bond of friendship, they grow closer and could possibly find new love with each other. Alas, it wasn’t in the cards. Rather than rehash what should have been done two years ago, what didn’t happen, let’s talk about what did. After growing closer and closer over recent months, Sam and Patrick finally realized what others (like Alexis and Elizabeth) have realized — there’s sexual tension between the two of them!
Sam was newly single, coming off a breakup with Dr. Silas Clay (Michael Easton); Patrick was on the road to divorcing his wife Robin. As they worked together to solve the mystery of the accident that took his son’s life, they found a comfortableness that made them both happy. It’s nice to watch their crush turn into something more. Watching these friends tip toe to the line that exists between friend and lover was frustrating and amusing, but all the while entertaining. And surprisingly, we were okay with Sam stopping herself from going any further with Patrick until she knew she was ready for it. The old Sam would have hopped right on Patrick like there was no tomorrow, but she had feelings of her own to sort out and couldn’t do that if things were messy with Patrick.
But the flirting never ceased, the chemistry continued to soar off the charts. A few kisses, an erotic dream and a major falling out later, Patrick and Sam are now official! They DTR’ed (defined the relationship for those not in the know) and agreed to see where their relationship goes. There’s a natural ease whenever Kelly Monaco and Jason Thompson share scenes together. It helps that they have 10-year friendship to lean on, and that friendship between those two helps make Sam and Patrick’s relationship more believable.
There’s something really special that happens when you fall in love with your best friend (trust us, we know), and they return those feelings. It’s not going to be easy, as moving forward puts so much more at risk. If it all goes wrong, you lose your best friend. But if it goes right? The world is yours for the taking.
2015 will be the year of Sam and Patrick. As GH continues to build them on their new romantic journey, there will be rough terrain ahead in the form of the past. No, not Silas. We’re talking about Sam and Patrick’s spouses — the captive Robin and the very much alive but amnesiac-under-Cassadine-control Jason Morgan aka Jake Doe. Robin’s less of a threat given Kimberly McCullough’s limited availability, but Jake(son)? The threat is real. Much like Sam and Jason in the beginning of their relationship, there isn’t much love lost between Sam and Jake. Sam knows there’s more to Jake than she can prove at the moment, but will her determination to expose Jake prove too much for Patrick to bear? The reveal that Jake is really Jason will certainly create angst for Port Charles’ newest power couple, but that’s what good drama is made of.
