Now, Vernon has asked Victor to serve as the keynote speaker for his grandson Martin’s (Brandon Claybon) fundraiser. Also in attendance are Kyle (Michael Mealor) and Martin, friends who first bonded in New York City after college. Martin extended the invitation to Kyle, who arrived alongside his parents, Jack (Peter Bergman) and Diane (Susan Walters). These standout chefs will battle through a season of signature challenges for the biggest cash prize in culinary television history – $1 million. Hosted and executive-produced by food expert Padma Lakshmi, with acclaimed chefs Michael Cimarusti and Wylie Dufresne serving as judges, the competition will test these elite chefs against the series’ 10 culinary commandments – meat, vegetables, sauces, dessert, innovation, flavors, sustainability, world cuisine, consistency, culinary science and technology. But despite multiple doctors, no obvious source or medical cause can be found. When she discovers that a student of hers, Kyle, can also hear the sound, the two strike up an unlikely and intimate friendship. Finding themselves increasingly isolated from their families, friends and colleagues, they fall in with a disparate group of neighbors, led by a charismatic couple, Jo and Omar, who also claim they can hear what they call “The Hum” – but rather than track down the source to stop it, believe it is a gift, heard only by a “chosen few.” Over the course of five episodes, the gripping and thought-provoking series explores the seduction of the wild and unknowable, the human search for the transcendent, the rise of conspiracy culture in the West, and the desire for community and connection in our increasingly polarized times.
