With the character and storyline introductions out of the way, Heroes Reborn’s third episode, “Under The Mask”, allowed for the rebooted series to finally kick into high gear. From the looks of things, this third episode also spelled out more of what the audience can expect going forward. Let’s take a look.
Heroes Reborn Review Season 1, Episode 3: Under the Mask
H.R.G./Quentin
Maybe it’s just the ties to the original series, but Bennet’s trajectory in this series is still the most captivating to me. There are so many questions to what happened in Odessa on that fateful June 13th, and this episode only added more to the book. The biggest question of all is still what really happened to his precious daughter Claire. The first two episodes (and many of the show’s later promos) have insisted that the former cheerleader did in fact die. However, Noah’s discovery that Claire may not have been in Odessa on the 13th, and the fact that the security footage jumped back & forth (a hint that Hiro was somehow involved) seem to dispute what we thought we knew. I have a feeling Tim Kring & Co. may be leaving this question unanswered for a while, especially if they can somehow get Hayden Panettiere (who’s currently singing her way through the country world on Nashville) back for a cameo appearance. With Masi Oka making his return as the lovable Hiro next week, hopefully we’ll have more answers soon.
Renautas/Molly Walker/Erica
Poor Molly Walker just can’t catch a break. After being tormented by the likes of Sylar & “Nightmare Man” Maury Parkman, she’s now being held captive by the evil head of Renautas, Erica Kravid. Erica is like an eviler Steve Jobs who plans to harness Molly Walker’s Evo tracking ability in a program called E.P.I.C. to find every evolved human on the planet. Naturally, this technology is in the absolute wrong hands & spells doom for many of our characters.
Luke & Joanne
In my last review I commented that Luke & Joanne’s storyline was one of the weaker spots of this new series for me; It looks like I’ve spoken too soon. The reveal that Luke is harboring his own Evo powers adds a new, unique element of drama for this murderous couple. Much like Peter Petrelli before him, we see Luke glowing at the end of the hour and I can imagine that this revelation won’t go over so well for Mrs. Collins. Seeing how long Luke will be able to harbor this secret from his wife should be interesting and should make for an even bigger moral dilemma for him very soon.
Carlos
Out of all the storylines that are developing this season, I am the least attached to or captivated by our dear Carlos’. His downtrodden playboy to superhero story is very by the (comic) books right now – something that I’m hoping to see change down the line. Admittedly, I loved watching his choreographed fight scene with Dylan Bruce’s Evo character and do want to see Carlos bring him to justice.
Tommy/Emily/Casper
After getting the majority of the screen time in the premiere episodes, Tommy didn’t have too much to do this time around. The mystery of who Casper – aka The Penny Man – is remains shrouded in secrecy, but it’s starting to look more and more like he’s looking out for Tommy. Perhaps he’s the father Tommy never knew about? The ending cliffhanger with Tommy’s mom’s car being hit should make for some stellar emotional performances next week.
Miko/Ren/Harris
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Kiki Sukezane (Miko) kicks ass! Within the span of three episodes, she’s managed to really make me care for Miko and watching her develop into the warrior she’s meant to become has me very excited for the rest of the season. I love that Hiro’s sword plays a big role in who she is as a character and having Ren as a sidekick really is an excellent parallel to Hiro and Ando from the original series. One of the most interesting powers in this series belongs to Harris, who has clones of himself around the globe. Cool, yes? Confusing? Definitely.
