Hold on to your brooms – Sabrina the Teenage Witch will soon be flying back to television. The Hollywood Reporter has announced a series based on The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina – a darker comic book take on the Sabrina story – is in the works at The CW.

Developed in partnership with Warner Bros. Television, the potential one-hour series is a far departure from the spunky Sabrina the Teenage Witch which ran on ABC, and later the WB, from 1996-2003.

The CW’s project, described tonally as Rosemary’s Baby meets The Exorcist, reimagines the classic Archie Comics character Sabrina as a dark coming-of-age story deals with horror, the occult, and witchcraft, and will see Sabrina struggle to reconcile her dual nature of being half-witch and half-mortal while protecting her family and the world from the forces of evil.

The television adaption will be written by Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who also writes the comic book series. Lee Toland-Krieger, who directed multiple episodes of Riverdale’s freshman run, is set to helm the Sabrina pilot should The CW opt to move forward with production. Joining Aguirre-Sacasa in producing roles will be Riverdale mainstays Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Archie Comics CEO Jon Goldwater.

The new project is eyed to debut in The CW’s 2018-19 television season as a companion to Riverdale. Casting and additional news on the new series will be revealed in the months to come.
