Limited series The Big Cigar premieres May 17 on Apple TV+. Based on the magazine article of the same name by Joshuah Bearman, the series tells the incredible true story of Hollywood revolution meeting social revolution. It’s a wild caper about Black Panther founder Huey P. Newton escaping from the FBI to Cuba with the assistance of famed producer Bert Schneider in an impossibly elaborate plan – involving a fake movie production – that goes wrong every way it possibly can.
Black Twitter: A People’s History premieres May 9 on hulu. Based on Jason Parham’s WIRED article “A People’s History of Black Twitter,” this three-part docuseries charts the rise, the movements, the voices and the memes that made Black Twitter an influential and dominant force in nearly every aspect of American political and cultural life.
Steve Carell will star in Netflix’s The Four Seasons alongside Tina Fey. The series is based on the 1981 feature film of the same name that was written and directed by Alan Alda and starred Alda and Carol Burnett. Production will begin later this year.
More cast have been added to Outlander: Blood of My Blood. Joining the cast in a role “Outlander” fans will recognize from early seasons is Sally Messham as “Mrs. Fitz,” Ellen’s maid at Castle Leoch and Murtagh’s aunt. Terence Rae will be playing another role familiar to fans of the flagship series, “Arch Bug,” who’s working as a bodyguard to Clan Grant; Sadhbh Malin will be playing another fan-favorite character, “Jocasta Cameron,” the feisty youngest child of the MacKenzie clan; and Ailsa Davidson will be playing her sister “Janet MacKenzie,” the fifth (and final) MacKenzie sibling. Meanwhile, in the 20th century, Annabelle Dowler joins the cast as “Lizbeth,” Julia’s boss at the War Department; and Harry Eaton as “Private Charlton,” Henry Beauchamp’s fellow soldier and friend. The series will explore the lives and relationship of Claire’s parents, Julia Moriston and Henry Beauchamp and Jamie’s parents, Ellen MacKenzie and Brian Fraser. The series will center on these two parallel love stories set in two different time periods, with Jamie’s parents in the early 18th century Scottish Highlands and Claire’s parents in WWI England. Production on the 10-episode season is underway in Scotland.
Roku has ordered Tracee Travels hosted by Tracee Ellis Ross. A champion of solo travel, Tracee invites viewers on her journey, as she meticulously, laboriously, and sometimes ridiculously prepares for and travels solo to spectacular locations. Tracee charts her own path, as she explores the intersection of beauty, fashion, design, food, and culture at each stop of her trip. The docu-series will shoot later this year and debut exclusively on The Roku Channel in 2025. The first season’s locations will be announced at a later date.
Animated preschool series Dora has been renewed for a second season. The series follows everyone’s favorite bilingual explorer, Dora, and her best monkey friend, Boots as they embark on epic adventures in a fantastical rainforest. Guided by trustworthy Map, Dora and her friends must work together to overcome many obstacles while being challenged by the sneakiest fox, Swiper . Kathleen Herles, the original voice of Dora the Explorer, voices Mami.
Colin Donnell will guest star in the final two episodes of FBI: International. The casting comes as original star Luke Kleintank will be leaving after three seasons on the CBS series
Limited series Presumed Innocent will now premiere on Apple TV+ June 12. The limited series was originally set to premiere June 14.
Néstor Carbonell, Santiago Segura, Ash Santos, Jessica Rothe and Arturo Del Puerto have been cast in Netflix’s upcoming series Pulse. They join Willa Fitzgerald, Justina Machado, Colin Woodell, Jack Bannon, Jessie T. Usher, Chelsea Muirhead, Daniela Nieves and Jessy Yates in the medical drama series.
My Lady Jane premieres June 27 on Prime Video. Inspired by the best-selling book, the series is a radical retelling of English royal history, in which King Henry VIII’s son Edward does not die of tuberculosis, Lady Jane Grey is not beheaded, and neither is her rascal of a husband Guildford.
